Atef Najib is a former Syrian security official who gained notoriety for his role in the violent crackdown on protests in Daraa during the early stages of the Syrian civil war in 2011. He is a cousin of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and served as the head of the Political Security Directorate in Daraa at the time.
